-
Do believe the victim
-
Do reassure her/him that this is not her/his fault; it is not God's will.
-
Do protect her/his confidentiality.
-
Do respect her/his choices.
-
Do emphasize that the marriage covenant is broken by the violence/emotional abuse according to the churches teaching. USCCB “We emphasize that no person is expected to stay in an abusive marriage. Violence and abuse, not divorce, break up a marriage. We encourage abused persons who have divorced to investigate the possibility of seeking an annulment.” Thus opening the door for healing.
